Biographie / Biography


Christopher Balme ist seit 2006 W3-Professor für Theaterwissenschaft an der LMU München und Direktor des Instituts. Geboren und aufgewachsen ist er in Neuseeland, wo er auch, an der Universität von Otago, graduiert wurde. In Deutschland lebt und arbeitet er seit 1985, an den Universitäten in Würzburg, München und Mainz. Von 2004 bis 2006 stand er der Theaterwissenschaft an der Universität Amsterdam vor. Von 2007 bis 2010 war er Dekan der Fakultät für Geschichts- und Kunstwissenschaften der LMU München.
Das deutsche Theater, interkulturelles Theater sowie Theater und andere Medien stehen im Mittelpunkt seiner zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen.

Prof. Balme war u.a. Präsident der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Theaterwissenschaft, seit 2011 ist er Präsident der IFTR (International Federation for Theatre Research); von 2004 bis 2006 war er Herausgeber des Theatre Research International. Aktuell gibt er die Zeitschrift Forum Modernes Theater heraus. Zu seinen jüngsten Publikationen zählen z.B. Decolonizing the Stage: Theatrical syncretism and postcolonial drama (Oxford 1999), Pacific Performances: Theatricality and Cross-Cultural Encounter in the South Seas (Palgrave Macmillan 2007) und Cambridge Introduction to Theatre Studies (Cambridge 2008). Seine deutschsprachige Einführung in die Theaterwissenschaft, erstmals veröffentlicht 1999, gibt es bereits in der 4., überarbeiteten Auflage.


Christopher Balme currently holds the chair in theatre studies at the University of Munich. He was born and educated in New Zealand where he graduated from the University of Otago. He has lived and worked in Germany since 1985 with positions at the universities of Würzburg, Munich and Mainz. From 2004 to 2006 he held the chair in theatre studies at the University of Amsterdam.  From 2007 to 2010 he was dean of the Faculty of History and Art at the University of Munich.
He has published widely on German theatre, intercultural theatre and theatre and other media.

Prof. Balme is past-president of the German Society for Theatre Research; since 2011 he is president of the IFTR (International Federation for Theatre Research); he was Senior Editor of Theatre Research International from 2004-2006. He currently edits the journal Forum Modernes Theater. Recent publications include Decolonizing the Stage: Theatrical syncretism and postcolonial drama (Oxford 1999), Pacific Performances: Theatricality and Cross-Cultural Encounter in the South Seas (Palgrave Macmillan 2007) and Cambridge Introduction to Theatre Studies (Cambridge 2008). His introduction to theatre studies in German Einführung in die Theaterwissenschaft, originally published in 1999, is now in its 4th revised edition. His current research interests focus on the legacy of modernism in the globalization of the arts; theatre and the public sphere; the relationship between media and performance.
