Abstract:
This talk will present key ideas from my short book Theory for Theatre Studies: Sound, discussing the production and reception of sound in theatre and performance across history and in the context of the evolution of new technologies. It will also address emergent points of focus for thinking about sound in theatrical performance, paying particular attention to sound in more inclusive and global contexts.

Susan Bennett is best known for her early work on theatre audiences and for her interrogations of Shakespeare in contemporary performance. Her book Sound was published in 2019 in the series “Theory for Theatre Studies” which she co-edits with Kim Solga for Methuen Drama. Other recent publications span topics from Disney theme parks to Ivo van Hove’s Lazarus. She is currently working on a book about the instrumentalization of performance in support of corporate, city and national brands.
