"Musical Theatre and Jazz – Intersections in Directing, Training, Performing"

A panel discussion with Josef E. Köpplinger, Marianne Larsen, and Lars Hansen,
hosted by George Burrows (University of Portsmouth) and David Roesner (LMU Munich)

Time: 16 March 2022 at 4 pm-5.30 pm (CET) via Zoom (see link below)

Musical theatre references jazz in its music and performance styles and in its representations of race, gender, sexuality and class. Conversely, jazz has adopted features of musical theatre in its repertoire of ‘standards’ and approaches to performing, recording and marketing. As part of the ongoing research project on these intersections, the Musical Theatre and All That Jazz Research Network seeks to nurture dialogues with practitioners and educators across different international theatre cultures.

In order to explore the relationships between musical and jazz in the German-speaking theatre world, we have invited an esteemed panel of experts to reflect on its various interplays from their individual perspectives: Marianne Larsen as a musical performer and teacher at Munich’s prestigious Theatre academy; Josef E. Köpplinger as an experienced director of musicals and Intendant of Munich’s much loved Gärtnerplatztheater; and Lars Hansen, a uniquely versatile bass player and bass teacher who travels between jazz ensembles and musical theatre orchestra pits.

Join us on 16 March at 4 pm - 5.30 pm (CET) online to discuss similarities and differences, synergies and conflicts, love affairs and animosities between "jazz" and "the musical" from perspectives on, in front of, and below the stage!
